How to register your address
After finding a home and signing the rental contract, the next step is to register your address in Germany, a process called “Anmeldung” (registration). This involves going to your city's registry office, the Bürgerbüro, often inside the Rathaus or KVR, the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (the district administration department). This is the most important step because you will need it for any administrative tasks, such as opening a bank account or finding a job.
Here are the steps:
- Your identity card or passport and the rental contract need to be presented.
- In addition to questions concerning your personal data, you will be asked about your religion, and if you are a member of the Catholic community, a tax, the Kirchensteuer, will be deducted from your salary.
- When the registration is finished, you will receive the registration confirmation. It is important because it gives you the opportunity to complete some bureaucratic procedures, such as opening a bank account and obtaining a library card.
