Here are some Traditional Feasts, Sports & Music Events you should check out during your time in Munich:

Traditional Events

Fasching
Fasching is the name of the carnival in Munich. People dress up in costumes and tag along in the parades or go to one of the carnival parties which are held all over Munich. The dates differ each year since they are based on the Christian fasting period, but normally it takes place in February or March. The Fasching week begins on Thursday, which is called Weiberfasching. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, festivities and fun gradually increase, and reach the climax on Monday and Tuesday, called Rosenmontag and Faschingsdienstag. One of the highlights of Munich’s Carnival is the Dance of the Market Women, which takes place in Viktualienmarkt on Sunday of the carnival week.

Starkbierfest
Directly after the end of the carnival season, the Starkbierfest begins. It is one of the traditional Munich beer fests and takes place each year in March at the beer hall Paulaner am Nockherberg. It is similar to Oktoberfest with people dressing up in Lederhosen and Dirndl (traditional Bavarian clothes) and drinking from huge beer mugs. However, you should be aware if you order the traditional Starkbier. It is much stronger than normal beer and even stronger than the beer you get at Oktoberfest.

Frühlingsfest
From the end of April to the beginning of March the Frühlingsfest takes place on the Theresienwiese. Being very similar, one could say it is the little brother of the famous Oktoberfest. If you would like to avoid the immense crowds of Oktoberfest, this is the place for you. There are two beer halls with live music and an amazing atmosphere. If you would like to get a reserved table, you should be quick, because they are sold out very fast. However, there are also some spots for spontaneous visitors, which cannot be reserved in advance.

Dult
When the aroma of roasted almonds, bratwurst and Steckerlfisch hits your nose, you are at one of Munich's Dult. No, Oktoberfest is not the only folk festival in Munich. Three times a year, Mariahilfplatz hosts a unique folk festival that is cozy, neighborly and traditional. Don't miss the Auer Dult in the spring, the Kirchweihdult in the fall and the Jakobidult in the summer!

GARNIX
Contrary to its name, the annual Garnix Festival in June has a lot to offer. An open-air cinema, a beer garden, a varied live program and a wide range of food options (including vegetarian and vegan) await you on the campus in Garching. Here you can enjoy warm summer evenings in good company.

TUNIX
Similar to Garnix, the Tunix Festival is held annually in Munich. Themed "By Students for Students," you can look forward to enjoying delicious food, good drinks, and live music at Königsplatz in early July.

Oktoberfest
Of course, Oktoberfest should not be missing from this list ;) No folk festival in the world is as famous as the "Wiesn," as the locals call it. Every year, for more than two weeks from September to October, the Theresienwiese is the place to be for toasting and celebrating. Construction begins in July, about ten weeks before the event. All of Munich's major breweries are represented at the Oktoberfest. For every Munich resident and those who want to feel like one, the Oktoberfest is a must.

Sporting Events

SportScheck RUN
The SportScheck RUN is Germany's largest and most traditional city running Marathon in Munich.

The first race was held in Munich in 1979. With distances of 5 km, 10 km or a half marathon, the SportScheck RUN offers running events for high-performance runners as well as for runners who want to try out running for the first time.

Blade Night
The Bladenight, held in Munich since 1999, is the largest rollerblading event in Europe. With fellow rollerbladers you can ride through the streets of Munich on 20 different dates.

Munich Mash
The Mash Festival in Olympia Park is a must for all action fans! In early July, cheer on the stars of skateboarding, wakeboarding, BMX, and street dancing around Olympic Lake for free. Live concerts and other daily events are not lacking either!

Munich Marathon
The legendary route of the Munich Marathon begins at the Olympic Park in the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1972 Summer Olympics when the marathon was first held, and takes runners past some of the most important landmarks of the Bavarian capital. There are several ways to participate in the marathon. You can choose between the half marathon and the full marathon or take part in the traditional costume run, called Trachtenlauf. Trachtenlauf participants run 3.5 km in traditional costumes and can then enjoy a white sausage breakfast after. Cool, right?

Music Festivals

StuStaCulum
StuStaCulum takes place over three days in June. The festival takes place throughout the student city of Freimann. On four stages, artists from all genres present themselves. Furthermore you can find food and drinks at moderate prices and high quality. More than 80 artists and bands will be playing at the StuStaCulum, so it will never get boring!

ObenOhne Festival
The Oben Ohne festival takes place every year in July in Königsplatz. For little money (around 5 Euros) you can cheer for exciting national and international bands and see the first performances of young and up-and-coming bands.

Tollwood Festival
Tollwood is a giant tent festival in Munich that takes place in the south of the Olympic Park in the summer and on the Theresienwiese in the winter. In both summer and winter, Tollwood features circus-like tents, food trucks selling specialties from around the world, and arts and crafts booths. Here you can sample a wide variety of cuisines and attend concerts by both well-known and up-and-coming artists.
