How to get around Munich with public transports:

 

If it's your first time in Munich you will be surprised how easily and uncomplicated you can reach all important locations such as Marienplatz or Englischer Garten by public transport. The four most important means of transport besides the bicycle are the suburban train (S-Bahn), subway (U-Bahn), tramway and bus. 

The city is served by eight suburban lines. The main line (called Stammstrecke) offers great flexibility when traveling through the city center. You can also transfer to Munich’s Airport in 40 minutes from the city center with the lines S1 and S8. Suburban train stations are hard to miss as they are marked with a white “S” on a green background.

 
There are eight underground lines of the subway system that are connected to the suburban trains. Munich's underground system serves 100 stations in and around the city. There are also regular bus services in the Munich area. If you are planning to stay out into the night, you can take special night buses and tramways, which are marked with an "N" in front of the line number.
The Munich tram network is connected to the bus network, the U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

Which ticket you should choose: 

 

The fares for Munich's public transportation network are the same whether you're traveling by tram, train, subway or bus. There are a number of different ticket options, depending on how many trips you'd like to make and in which zones you are traveling. Zone M covers the entire Munich city area and in some cases extends beyond it. Zones 1 to 6 cover the districts outside the city area. Munich Airport is located in zone 5. 

 

• Single Ticket
• One ticket, one destination, and off you go. Single tickets are the ideal options if you're only planning on making one trip a day on public transport. Most of the tourist attractions in the city center are located within Zone 1, so if you are staying within this area, you only need the cheapest ticket. However, if you're planning to make more than two trips during the day, we recommend buying one of the travelcards (Stripe Ticket or Day Ticket). Prices for single tickets:
  - Short trip: € 1.80. A maximum of 4 stations in less than an hour
  - zone 1: 3.70€
  - zone 2: 7.40€
  - zone 3: 9.30€
  - zone 4: 11.10€
  

 

• Stripe Ticket
• The Stripe Ticket can be used in a flexible way: For multiple trips by a single person as well as for multiple trips by multiple people - perfect for city trips with friends. Interchanges and breaks are permitted, but return trips are not. The Stripe Ticket is less expensive than the single ticket. Depending on your destination and in which zones you are traveling, one or more of the ten stripes are stamped. If you're planning more than 2 trips in the city area, we highly recommend you to buy the Day Ticket.

 

• Day Ticket
• Single day tickets can be purchased for either Zone M (Munich city center) or Zone M - 5 (Munich city and selected surrounding areas, including the airport). The single day ticket allows you to make as many journeys as you like on all public transport services within the zone and time period for which it is valid (until 6 A.M. on the following day). Be sure to validate your ticket at the start of your first journey!

 

• Group Ticket
• Whether you want to explore the city with your friends or family, the Group Ticket is the cheapest and most convenient option. It’s valid for up to five adults for as many trips as you like. The Group Ticket can be used by your group for any number of trips on any day within the selected area of validity.

 

Special tickets for tourists (or if you want to feel like one):

• City Tour Card
• The CityTourCard is the perfect option for tourists or people who want to discover the city. It includes discounts at more than 80 tourist attractions in Munich and the surrounding area as well as a day ticket for all public transportation within the selected area of validity. The CityTourCard is available as a single or group ticket for a group of up to 5 adults.

 

• München Card
• Want to experience Munich's most important sights? Then you should get the Munich Card. This guest card includes a day ticket for public transportation within the selected area and the best part: you get discounts of up to 70% at numerous sights, shops, tours and restaurant  partners.

• Deutschlandticket
• If you use public transportation every day and want to take day trips to nearby cities on the weekends, we highly recommend the Deutschlandticket. You've probably heard of the Deutschlandticket or seen signs advertising it. If you haven't, here are the key points:
  - the ticket costs 49 euros per month, but if you are a student you will pay just 29 euros
  - it is valid on local public transport, i.e. buses, regional trains and trams, subways
  - the ticket is valid from the moment of purchase
  - you can also buy the ticket during the current month (up to the end of the month).
  - if you want to buy a ticket for one month only, you must cancel it by the 10th of the month at the latest.
  - you can buy the ticket directly at Deutsche Bahn ticket offices, MVV ticket offices or online.
