SIM Card
Why get a SIM card?
To stay in contact! When studying you want to keep in touch with friends, family, and of course new friends! If you want to make phone calls, your foreign SIM card most likely won’t serve you well. Without a German SIM card, roaming bills could get very high. That's where a local SIM card becomes your trusty companion.
Opting for a German SIM card not only ensures seamless communication but also prevents those pesky roaming charges from sneaking up on you. With a local number, you'll find it easier to stay connected with classmates for group projects, organize study sessions, and of course, share the excitement of your new German adventure with friends and family back home.
Phone Contract
One option is going for a phone contract. But hey, you'll need a German bank account and an ID for that. They want to make sure you're good for the bills. Quick tip: Never sign a contract you don't understand – get some help with the translation.
These contracts usually run for one to two years, and canceling early is often a bit tricky. You usually pay the bill at the end of the month as long as the contract is active. Listen up! Thinking of switching after your contract is up? Remember to cancel on time – usually about three months before it ends. Otherwise, it might automatically extend for another year or two.
Documents required to get a German SIM card:
-
Passport - most stores will want you to show your passport and they make a copy on the spot (necessary)
-
Copy of your visa or residence permit (necessary)
-
Shops rarely ask for your registration certificate, or Meldebescheinigung
-
German bank account (IBAN) if you are signing up for a post-paid plan (necessary)
Prepaid SIM Card
Another option is the prepaid SIM card. You can often grab these at supermarkets, gas stations, or kiosks for an affordable price. You'll need to sign a contract for this too. When activating, they'll want to see your name, address, and date of birth. Head to the store with your passport, ID, or another official document with your photo. Sometimes they will ask for a residence permit. Don’t forget to bring cash or card!
If you get your prepaid SIM card right from the provider's shop, you can activate it right there and get some assistance. However, if you get it at a supermarket, you have the chance of activating it online. You’ll need to prove your identity with a video identification process using your smartphone, tablet, or computer webcam.
Once your prepaid SIM card is up and running, you can load it up with credit. You will use this credit for calls, texting, and internet surfing. Need a refill? Grab some credit at the same places you bought the SIM card – supermarkets, gas stations, or kiosks.
