Nodes
Select the Draw tool and click on the drawing area - a new node is created. Your new node is automatically linked to the default settings from the global design. On the KontextMaps canvas, the node is marked with a small number that is only visible in the editor but not in the live map. This number helps you, for example, in the layer settings to identify your node unambiguously.
To edit your node, select it by clicking on it. For the settings there is a quick edit via the "quick toolbar" and for some of the options advanced settings, which can be accessed directly via the quick toolbar as well as via the side toolbar:
- Quick toolbar for nodes
-
1. Name
Here you name your node. It appears directly on the node and in the content box linked to this node as a heading. In addition, this name will be listed in the table of contents of your map.
Once you have selected the node by clicking on it, you can immediately edit the name.
Node without name
If you do not want to set a node name, you can choose between two options:
Option 1: The name should not be visible on the map and the node should not appear in the table of contents.
In this case, simply delete the name.
Option 2: The name should not be visible on the map, but the item should appear in the table of contents.
In this case, leave the name as it is and set the font size in the design settings to 0pt (zero).
2. Select object template
When you create a new item, the global default theme is automatically associated with the item. Choose this option to select a different object template. Each KontextMap offers a choice of templates. In addition to these, you can also create your own object templates or adapt existing ones to suit your own preferences. Once you have chosen a template, the design of your node will adapt automatically.
You can find out more about working with object templates in our tip: Saving time.
3. Design settings
With this tool you can edit the design of the node: Node colour, add an icon, border settings and node label settings.
In the quick toolbar you will find the most important setting options at a glance. For advanced settings such as shadows, line spacing or to create your own object template, please click the button "More options".
4. Content form
To add content to an item in a content box, add the content in this editor. Besides text, you can also add other media content here. All content you add here will appear in the main section of the content box. You can select which box is used for this content via the drop-down menu.
If you want to add additional delimited areas below the main section or extended content information such as search terms, please click the button "More options".
5. Direct link
With a direct link, your node functions as a navigation element. Insert the URL to an external website or to a node on your map.
Attention: Direct link and content cannot be set at the same time. This is because either a content box can be opened or a URL can be reached.
Tip: Use the direct link to direct you to a specific area on your map by clicking on a node. Proceed as follows:
-
Create the node that is to be used for navigation.
-
Open the preview of your map
-
Scroll/zoom/move to the area you want the node to node to.
-
Copy the URL from your preview browser window
-
Paste this URL into the direct link of your navigation point.
-
Click on the "Save" button
6. Visibility of the node
In this tool you have two options: layer Visibility and General Visibility of a node.
7. Layer visibility
If you work with several layers in your KontextMap, you can decide here on which layers the node should be visible. To do this, select the first layer on which the node should appear and the last layer, i.e. up to which layer the node should remain visible.
On the drawing area of the editor, a node that will not be visible on the layer you are working on is marked with a hatching. This way you always have an overview of the visibility of all elements in the editor.
Tip: If a node is to appear later, i.e. after zooming into the live map, you can select the layer from which the node is to appear when creating the node on the drawing area. In this way, the first visible layer is automatically set to the one on which you are in the editor view.
8. Visibility in the live map
If you have created a node but do not want it to be visible in the live map, you have the option to switch off the visibility of the node. If you activate the toggle in this area, the node will be marked as invisible in the editor and hidden in the live view of the map.
Tip: Publish nodes and contents of your map step by step. In this way, you create a chronological dramaturgy and you can gradually direct the focus to certain areas. To do this, prepare all nodes and content and then activate the visibility of the elements according to your publication schedule.
9. Navigation
With this option you can insert a reading path in the live map. At the bottom of the content box of the node, the link to the node to which the reader can navigate next or the node that appears in the order before appears. You can enter which nodes are in this field.
10. Duplicate
If you want to create a copy of your node, click on this icon. When cloning your node, the appearance and the content will be copied.
11. Delete
Use this option to delete the selected node.
12. Lock
If you lock the selected node using this option, it cannot be edited or moved by you or others. If a node is locked, this is indicated in the editor view by a small symbol next to the node number.
If you want to edit the node again, you can unlock it via the layer panel.

- Side toolbar
When you have selected an item, you can open the advanced design options from the left toolbar in addition to the quick toolbar. If you click on the "More options'' option in the quick toolbar, for example in the Design settings area, the side toolbar opens with the extended setting options.
The side toolbar is divided into three main areas.
1. design options,
2. content management and
3. the settings and options for publishing the map.
Selecting an item will automatically open the design options section.
You will find a detailed description of the design options of the side toolbar in the item "Create and design structure". Everything you need to know about content management can be found in the section "Edit and manage content".
