Add and
Manage
Content
All thematic aspects visually in one overview and behind every node there is content: this is another core function of the KontextMaps. It makes it possible to create extensive maps that contain a large amount of multimedia content. A "deep dive" into the content of the presented topic. Add content to each aspect of your theme, which is presented in a content box. This opens as soon as you click on the connected node in the live map. Your content can also be enriched with various media files. To make managing this data as easy as possible and optimised for use on the web, there is a powerful media management tool in the KontextMaps Editor.
In addition to the node-related content, there are further options for enriching the content of your map. For example, add a glossary, a source list or a foreword in an editorial. Or you can create a header that appears above your map and includes a logo and links.
FAQs about content
- What options are there for presenting content?
- You can choose from a selection of content boxes to present your content. You can choose between boxes that open above a node and boxes that open to the left of the node across the entire height of the screen. You can choose different boxes for different types of content. For example, the large box that opens to the top is particularly suitable for presenting a single video or an infographic, whereas longer text with media content fits well in a larger box on the side.
- What types of media can be added?
-
Add videos, images, audio files and more to your map.
For videos, the following formats are allowed: m4p, mpeg, mov, webm, mkv.
For photos and pictures you can use the following formats: png, jpg, jpeg, gif
For illustrations and icons you can use the svg format.
For audio files, the formats mp3, opus, ogg are allowed.
In addition to multimedia files, you can also upload other formats, which you can make available for download. Such formats could be: ppt, pdf, zip
You can find more information on the types of media and media management in the section "Manage media".
- Can I make documents available for download?
- Yes. Add the URL to this file to the text where it is to be downloaded. To do this, select the text or icon in the text editor, click on the link button and enter the URL to the file. You can make this file available in the media administration and copy the URL there or select the URL from an external source.
- How do I create a table of contents?
- The table of contents that appears in the live map is generated automatically as soon as a live version of your map is created. Each item that is placed on the map is sorted alphabetically in the overview of the article list. In addition to the articles, a glossary or the source list is also listed in the table of contents as soon as you create each of these.
- How does the map internal search work?
-
All contents of the map articles as well as the metadata of the media management are automatically indexed for the live map.
This indexing is started automatically by the KontextMaps tool. In the live map, you can then search for keywords and receive not only the list of articles in which the word occurs, but also links to the media content in which the search word has been stored in the metadata. For each article, you also have the option of adding search terms that do not appear in the text itself.
- How does a glossary get into the map?
- In order to keep a glossary, there is a form in the editor in which you can keep all terms and definitions. You can find more information under "Add a glossary".
- Can I add a preface to my map?
-
To add a preface to your map, you can simply use the "Editorial" function. With this you can add introductory words or the introduction of all contributors. In the live map, the editorial will be visible as a tab at the bottom of the map. If you click on it, it will move over the map.
You can find out how to create an editorial in the section "Creating an editorial".
- Gibt es ein Quellenverzeichnis?
-
Yes, you can add a detailed source list to your map. There are two options to choose from: A simple description + URL to the source or the upload of a BibTeX file. If you add such a file, the contents will automatically be set to the IEEE format (https://ieeeauthorcenter.ieee.org/wp-content/uploads/IEEE-Reference-Guide.pdf). You will find the source directory in the table of contents of your live map.
More information about creating a source directory can be found in the section "Creating a source directory".
- What are marginalia?
-
Marginalia have their origin in book design. They are additional notes, comments and corrections that are usually placed in the margins of a book page. They are therefore information that supplement the text.
In the Kontext Maps, marginalia are additional texts or media that are placed below the main text. To clearly separate this information from the main text, it is separated by a horizontal line. Marginal information is only available in the article boxes on the side. In the content form you will find the option of setting two marginal information items per article.
You can specify how the typographical design of this information should look in the global design settings.
- I copied text from another programme and now everything looks strange - what happened?
-
When you import text from other programmes such as Google Docs or Word, it can happen that formatting and document codes are taken over from the other file.
The KontextMaps editor has an integrated "code detector" that deletes this formatting. However, it happens from time to time that some code passages are very stubborn or that texts are copied from other programmes that are not yet taken into account by the detector.
If this is the case, you can mark the text in the text editor of the content form and select the option "Delete formatting" under the tab "Format". If this does not help, copy the text into a plain text programme and remove the formatting there before copying the text into the KontextMaps editor. However, all mark-ups (bold, italics, etc.) and links will be lost.
- Is there an automatic spelling correction?
- If automatic spell-checking is turned on in your browser, which is normally the default setting, then your text will be checked when you type it into the article box. However, grammar and punctuation are not checked.
- Can I create a lightbox for inserted images?
- Yes - this is done automatically. As soon as you insert an image into an article box, it will be clickable in the live map. If the reader clicks on it, it opens enlarged.
