Media Files
-
With the use of different media you can turn your map into a multimedia experience. Since the KontextMaps editor and the live map work web-based via browsers, media can be integrated via iframes or via URL to media on other websites. The best solution for all media you want to publish in your map is KontextMaps' own media management. Here you can not only upload and collect images, but it also contains an algorithm that converts and versions all media content in a web-optimised way. Furthermore, you can add additional information and search terms to each media file via a metadata form. This has the advantage that not only texts but also these media contents can be found via the map internal search of the live map.
You can access the media management via the toolbar on the left side of the editor or via all areas where you can add media content. It always opens in an overlay pop-up. Here you will find two categories: 1. your own media management and 2. the media templates.
- 1. Add media
-
To upload a media file, click on the large + symbol in the media administration. Select the file to upload. A settings form for this file now appears.
(1) The preview window shows you your file.
(2) Below you can select the appropriate settings templates. With these you can optimise the conversion of the algorithm that ultimately creates the versions of the file.
(3) On the right side of the window you will see an overview with information about possible file formats and maximum file sizes.
(4) If you now press the upload button, the file is converted in a web-optimised way and appears in the media gallery for selection.
- 2. Uploading multiple files in a batch
-
If you want to upload more than one file in one operation, you can either select several files from a row in the selection window by holding down the Shift key or select individual files by holding down the Command key.
In the preview window you will now see a list with all the selected data.
(1) In the overview you can see whether the file is suitable for upload or not. If a file does not meet the requirements, you will see this in the overview. Compare the suitable options with the (2) Overview of possible file formats. As with the upload of a single media file, you can select setting templates for the media batch (3), thanks to which the conversion and versioning of the files is optimised. Make sure that in this case these settings templates are applied to all data of the upload process.
If you press the (4) Upload button, all selected files will be converted in a web-optimised way and appear in the media gallery for selection.
- Possible media types
-
As a web-based tool, the optimal conversion of media is of particular importance. Especially if you want to publish many pieces of media in your map. The media management algorithm will create several versions for each uploaded file so that your media content always looks as good as possible while the performance of the map is not affected. To ensure that there is enough image information for the conversion, we recommend that you use original data when uploading media rather than files that have already been heavily compressed.
Overview of file types and maximum upload sizes per file.
Videos
File formats: m4p, mpeg, mov, webm, mkv
Maximum file size per file: max 500Mb
Optimal file settings: Render in HEVC (H.265) format
Image files
File formats: png, jpg, jpeg, gif:
Max file size per file: 5Mb
Vector-based web file format
File format: svg
Maximum file size per file: no limits
Note on SVGs: Even if the file size is not limited, you should pay attention to the complexity of the file. SVG data is read by the browser like a text file. If the content is very small and complex, the code of the file will also be very long. This means: the more complex, more curvy, the more path nodes the file has, the longer the browser needs to read and display the file, which can ultimately affect the loading time. For such complex content, such as images with many details, we therefore recommend the PNG format.
Audio formats
File formats: mp3, opus, ogg
Maximum file size per file: 10Mb
All other file formats
File formats: ppt, pdf, zip
Maximum file size per file: 500Mb
Note: You can use these file formats to make them available for download within the map. A preview of these formats is not shown in the live map.
Add and manage metadata
To add metadata to your file, select the media management via the toolbar on the left side of the editor. Select the file in the overview and click on the "i" symbol. The setting form for all metadata now opens.
Here you have the possibility to adjust the (1) settings templates for the image conversion or to enter the metadata on the right side (2). Add copyright information, search terms or keywords here. Finally, press the (3) "Update" button to save the new information.
Using media templates
In the KontextMaps Editor you will find a number of media templates sorted into categories. Depending on the licence model, different categories are available. You can use these templates for icons on the map or as additions to your media content.
